Appearances

Gaiety Club – Westhoughton, Bolton

Sands Casino – Blackpool

Theatre Club –  Marton, near Blackpool

Jayne began the second phase of her tour with a week’s worth of shows at the Gaiety club in Westhoughton near Bolton and appearances in Blackpool. Starting on the Sunday night it appears that the audience were more receptive to her act than those she had experienced on the first part of the tour. Her act appears to have been honed somewhat compared to her shows in the North East and now consisted of some singing, violin playing, and a sketch. Writing in The Stage about her Bolton appearances, reviewer James Towler commented on her act:

“[it] struck me as being singularly well planned. The warm and appreciative audience were well pleased with what they saw and needless to say, they saw quite a lot”.

Later that week Jayne celebrated her 34th birthday on the 19th April at the rural Old Church Inn at Birtle in Lancashire. The inn is still in business.

Jayne’s dates in Blackpool do not appear to have been covered by the press in any great detail. She was already familiar with Blackpool having switched on the seaside town’s famous lights in 1959, an event which was captured on film and famous for the local mayor becoming rather flustered in Jayne’s presence.

The few details about Jayne’s time in Blackpool come from a Blackpool Gazette article published in 2012. In this there are mentions of TV footage being available of Jayne at the Imperial Hotel, looking around the Winter Gardens, and sitting on North Pier. It is clear that she did stay at the Imperial Hotel as their history brochure records, but other than this there is scant information about her appearances at the Sands Casino or Theatre Club.
