Contract Disputes

6th April – 14th April 1967

As we have seen, Jayne’s tour ground to a halt due to the termination of her original contract after the dates in Newcastle, South Shields, Stockton-on-Tees, and Middlesbrough.

At this point it may have seemed that the tour was over, but the impresarios of British clubland were not willing to let a possible star booking leave if there was the potential for money to be made. Jayne’s original tour manager, Don Arden, had walked away leaving Jayne staying at the Scotch Corner Hotel near Catterick in North Yorkshire. Money was owed to her and she was struggling to pay the hotel bill. David Jacobs, issuing a statement on behalf of Contemporary Records, claimed that

“…the reason for any amounts not being paid to Miss Mansfield is that they will be set off against the damage suffered by the company”.

A good summary of the contract dispute, plus two excellent photos by prestigious photographer Jane Brown, can be found in the Guardian archives.

This still didn’t stop Jayne making a non-scheduled appearance in York on the night of the 7th April. She attended the York Press ball where she was photographed congratulating a prizewinner. Bizarrely it was reported that on the way home Jayne’s taxi caught fire and she was forced to hitch a lift back to her Scotch Corner hotel.

However, Jayne’s fortunes improved when four offers of nightclub work came in; she would play Batley and Greasborough in Yorkshire, and Bolton and Blackpool in Lancashire for a fee of £4,000.

The tour was back on…
