Jayne’s Arrival

24^th March – 26^th March 1967

Jayne arrived at Heathrow Airport on Friday 24^th March 1967 and within minutes of walking off the plane she had already caused controversy. Accompanying her on the journey was her lawyer and lover Sam Brody who smuggled Jayne’s two pet Chihuahua dogs through customs in Jayne’s leopard skin coat, which he happened to be wearing at the time.

Brody protested that the dogs, called Momsicle and Popsicle, were cold and in no way was he intending to conceal them from customs officials. In the end the dogs went to a quarantine centre at Stanwell in Middlesex and Jayne, her youngest son Antonio, and Brody proceeded to London where they checked into the Savoy hotel.

Later that day Jayne visited Carnaby Street where a local shop called Lady Jane, co-owned by Harry Fox, had custom made a crocheted see-through dress. Sensing a photo opportunity the shop had opened up especially for Jayne and the press, but Mansfield would only agree to wear the dress on two conditions; firstly that she was paid for the photos and secondly that she could find some underwear to put under the dress. Some mini skirts from the shop were negotiated as payment. As for the underwear, a bra was sent from her hotel and a pair of men’s underpants were provided by a reporter.

There then followed a scuffle in the shop as Harry Fox tried to usher out the photographers and Jayne’s manager Don Arden took exception.

The following day, Saturday 25^th March, Jayne appeared on popular BBC TV show Juke Box Jury alongside fellow panellists Lulu, Pete Murray and Jimmy Savile. Her appearance was not without problems however as her agreement with the BBC jeopardised another TV arrangement she had made to appear on rival channel ITV. She had agreed to take part on the Eamon Andrews Show on ABC (which was a regional company under the ITV umbrella) on April 9^th but following her BBC appearance this was dropped.

The incidents and controversy had only just begun.

It is said that Jayne could take some miniskirts from the shop as payment for the see-through photos and that the underpants were given her from a reporter. The name of the shop was LADY JANE.
